TURA, March 11: A two-day training-cum-input distribution programme for farmers was on Saturday organised by Biotech KISAN Hub, NEHU, Tura Campus, at the Cherong SHG, Katuli Walkamgre, South West Garo Hills and at the Bandalkona Training Centre.
The programme was led by Project Coordinator, Biotech KISAN Hub, Dr Arindam Barman, along with secretary, Adil Gandhian Society (AGS), Michael Sangma, project assistant Neha M Sangma and project activity assistant Amy D. Shira, both of the Biotech KISAN Hub, NEHU, among others.
During the programme, Dr Barman encouraged the farmers to focus on growing vegetables suitable for low-cost polyhouse cultivation (tomato, capsicum, naga chilli etc) and to produce compost/vermicompost that would result in increasing farmers’ income throughout the year.
He also informed that the programme was organised with an aim to uplift the socio-economic development of aspirational villages in Ampati.
Training on how to scientifically grow vegetables, how to use vertical spaces inside the polyhouse and how to make the compost/vermicompost with the available biodegradable wastes was provided by Neha M Sangma and Amy D Shira.
Training was also provided to the physically disabled members of Cherong SHG, while an open scientist- farmer interaction was organised to understand and redress the concern of farmers.
Farmers were also provided with vegetable-planting materials during the programme.
