Shillong, March 20: As there is a sudden spike in cases of Covid-19 with many people suffering from flu like symptoms, experts have asked not to panic.

The new XBB.1.16 variant of Covid is being monitored by experts closely as hundreds of cases are being reported on a daily basis. India reported over 800 cases on Saturday which is the highest single-day surge in the past four months. A total of 76 samples of the new variant were detected in different parts of the country.

The new strain has been found in 12 countries and is rapidly spreading in India, the US, Brunei, and Singapore.

Doctors say there is a new variant displacing old ones but so far, there is not much increase in severe cases. They say it is not something unexpected as the cases are going up due to declining immunity.

Even as cases of H3N2 are going up across the country, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is keeping a close eye on the situation and has advised the state government about rising Covid cases.
