SHILLONG, March 25: The state government has spent a total of Rs 7.77 crore for the management of the waste disposal site at Marten, Mawiong, between 2019 and 2022, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar informed.
In a written reply in the ongoing Assembly budget session, Dhar informed that the break-up of the amount which is spent by the government for managing the disposal site includes Rs 2.79 crore in 2019-2020, Rs 2.37 crore in 2020-2021 and Rs 2.60 crore in 2021-2022.
Informing that the 18-acres site at Marten has been in use by the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) since 1938, he said that the functional facilities installed and commissioned for the purpose of processing and disposal of waste include the 170 TPD Compost Plant set up to process the biodegradable waste.
“The purpose of the plant is to convert the degradable waste to compost. The plant was commissioned in March, 2022. The compost produced thereof is being tested,” Dhar said.
According to him, the Bio Medical Waste Treatment Plant for safe treatment and disposal of bio-medical waste collected from various hospitals, clinics, laboratories located in Shillong and the suburbs by SMB was also commissioned.
The minister said that the plant consists of a 100 kg per hour incinerator, a 50 kg per hour autoclave, a 50 kg per hour shredder and an IKLD Effluent Treatment Plant.
“For the safe treatment of the sewage collected by the Cesspool Trucks of the SMB, a 115 KLD Seepage Treatment Plant was installed and commissioned,” he said.
Dhar further stated that the sanitary landfill for disposal of process rejects and inert waste with a capacity of approximately 13,0000 cubic metre and a designed life of eight years was also developed and commissioned.
