SHILLONG, April 6: The Voice of the People Party (VVP) on Thursday petitioned Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to convene a special session of the state Assembly in order to allow the members to debate the need to review the present reservation policy.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, VPP general secretary Ricky Syngkon said the party would like to draw his attention to the vexed and pertinent issue on the roster system and the state Job Reservation Policy. These are grave matters of concern across the state that warrant a serious debate, discussion, and resolution, he said.
He referred to the April 13 order of the High Court of Meghalaya, which stated: “These are policy matters that are best left to the legislature and the executive and upon a firm stand being taken, it will be open to any citizen affected thereby to question the propriety thereof in accordance with the law.”
Handing over the letter to the CM was the first step the party has taken, Syngkon told reporters later.
“We will leave it to the wisdom of the government to take the right decision on this matter,” he said.
He said the VPP is yet to decide on approaching other political parties in the opposition for demanding a special session of the House.
