SHILLONG, April 11: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Tuesday said it is contended to play the role of the Opposition with or without any understanding with the other two opposition parties – Congress and the TMC.
“I don’t think there is anything wrong in the performance of the VPP despite not having an alliance of the opposition parties. The VPP will continue to perform its role and duties as a responsible opposition party,” VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said.
Recalling the recently concluded budget session, he said, “Did you see the absence of any opposition alliance affecting the role of the opposition in the last Assembly session?”
“Many people commented that it was one of the most interesting sessions that the state has ever had and the VPP was lauded for keeping the government on its toes and challenging it on many fronts,” he said.
Stating that the government was afraid of the opposition and limited the number of days of the budget session, Myrboh said, “The budget session had only seven days and the opposition members had only ten minutes to discuss the Governor’s address. This shows that the government was not willing to give any room to the VPP to exercise their right as the Opposition.”
Meanwhile, buoyed over the “recognised state political party” tag granted by the Election Commission of India on Monday, the VPP has now fixed its eyes on the upcoming district council elections and the Lok Sabha polls due next year.
“We will not be resting on this recognition. We won four seats and we need to improve our performance in the future so that the party becomes a force to reckon with in 2028,” Myrboh said.
“We have our eyes on the ADC polls as well as the Lok Sabha elections,” he added.
