SHILLONG, April 12: United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh on Wednesday said the leaders of the party will meet Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma as soon as he returns to the state to discuss the roster system and the reservation policy.
Lyngdoh told reporters the UDP has to be careful and cautious since these are sensitive matters.
“We are trying to approach in a mature manner and we will not like to make any statement that complicates the situation,” he said.
Stating that the UDP will play a constructive role, he said it wants the matters to be resolved as per the expectations of the people.
“We have to understand that it is only the government which can resolve these matters. There is no point making a noise. A detailed discussion with the CM will be the right way to address the concerns about the reservation policy and the roster system,” Lyngdoh said.
He, however, said he has nothing to comment on the demand to convene a special session of the Assembly. He said the party’s priority will be to place the issues at the right forum so they could be deliberated upon for a resolution.
Meanwhile, Lyngdoh dismissed the UDP is facing any threat from the Voice of the People Party (VPP) which is fast emerging as a strong political force having taken the lead by making its intentions clear with regard to the roster system and the state reservation policy.
“The VPP is only a new party. People still look up to the UDP as the major regional party in the state. We are ready to face and fight it,” he said, while adding that parties come and go.
He said that the UDP is an old party which has to survive many turbulent situations.
