Shillong, April 16: The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, announced on Sunday that due to severe heatwave conditions, all schools and colleges in the state would be closed during the coming week.

Banerjee stated that in recent days, children have been returning from school with health issues like headaches.

Private educational institutions were asked by the CM to do the same, and an official announcement of the choice will be made soon.

She also urged people to stay indoors between the hours of 12 and 4 pm.

Due to the severe heat, the West Bengal government has previously moved up summer vacation at state-run and aided schools by three weeks to May 2, with the exception of hill districts.

Daytime temperature of over 40 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the state, and according to the MeT Department, the heatwave will last until April 19.
