Temperatures soaring
Shillong has been witnessing unusually hot days in the past few days with the maximum temperature hovering very close to the 30 degrees Celsius mark. In the absence of rainfall, the mean daily temperature has been recorded at nearly 5 to 6 degrees above normal.
The forecast for this week predicts hot sunny days for the residents with thunderstorms and rainfall likely only by the middle of next week.
As the mercury began soaring since last week, sale of cold drinks and ice-creams have begun registering a growth in the city. School and college students are seen gathering in large numbers around ice-cream shops and carts ordering their favourite flavours.
Shops selling fans and coolers have also indicated that business is growing but the long periods of load-shedding on a daily basis are making the electric equipment redundant.
Shillongites are eagerly waiting for the Rain Gods to shower their blessings and give respite from the heat and the power cuts.

Thank you, load-shedding
If you take away all your distractions that are keeping you up late in the night, how do you think it would impact your sleep? Astronomically, isn’t it?
Now, many of us wish we could refrain from distractions like the internet and our smartphones but every attempt seems to be a cul-de-sac. But worry not! Load-shedding is here to save us.
The power is cut at precisely 12 am and the citizens, like it or not, have to crawl into their beds.
Once the electricity supply is cut off, your Wi-Fi stops working. That deprives you of the high-speed internet. What little your phone could offer to you is also in vain as electricity and mobile network have had a peculiar interconnection — without power, connectivity weakens drastically.
It may be said that this way, load-shedding successfully helps you avoid the aforementioned intrusions.
