MAWKYRWAT, April 18: President of Meghalaya Film Makers Association (MeFilMA), Commander Shangpliang has flagged the absence of national highway from Shillong to Mawkyrwat and Ranikor, while expressing concern over the fate of the tourism sector in South West Khasi Hills.
Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, Shangpliang said that the tourism sector in the district has not picked up due to poor road condition despite South West Khasi Hills being home to many beautiful tourist spots.
According to him, these beautiful places in the district have become almost useless as the road conditions have discouraged tourists to visit.
In view of the government announcing the construction of the intermediate lane from Lad Mawreng to Weiloi under the North East Infrastructure Development Scheme, the state government, Shangpliang said, should approach the Centre for recognition of the Lad Mawreng-Weiloi-Mawkyrwat-Ranikor road as a national highway.
Shangpliang has also called upon the people of the district to push for national highway recognition for the aforementioned road.
He has also urged the local legislators from Mawphlang, Mawsynram, Mawkyrwat and Ranikor constituencies to take up the matter with the state government.
