Community volunteers get emergency response kits
NONGSTOIN, April 18: A total of 100 Aapda Mitra volunteers of West Khasi Hills received emergency response kits at a programme organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), West Khasi Hills, at the Conference Hall of Nongstoin College, Nongpyndeng, on Tuesday. The programme was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-CEO, DDMA, West Khasi Hills, HK Thabah as chief guest in the presence of the District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), West Khasi Hills, J Mawthoh, Deputy Controller, Civil Defence-Cum-Nodal Officer, AAPDA MITRA programme, West Khasi Hills, W Nonglang, Sub-Inspector, Civil Defence & Home Guards, Nongstoin, T Tynsong, besides Aapda Mitra volunteers and others. In his address to the volunteers, Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-CEO DDMA, West Khasi Hills, HK Thabah, encouraged them to share the knowledge of life-saving skills gained through the training programmes with their family and community members. Most of the volunteers who received the kits during the programme belong to the NCC, NSS besides the general youths of the area.

Group nitpicks issues at DC office
TURA, April 18: The A’chik Organization for Social Welfare (AOSW) has submitted a complaint to the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, alleging various hardships being faced by the people at his office in Williamnagar. In its complaint, the organisation alleged the frequent shortage of forms for birth certificates at the office. It pointed out that as the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Williamnagar has to cater to the needs of people from the entire district, such shortages are causing inconvenience to the people who come from far-off villages. The AOSW also claimed that there was a requirement to produce police verification to apply for a birth certificate for the people of Rongjeng area alone while the same was not required for those coming from other places of the district. It added that such a treatment meted out towards the people of Rongjeng is tantamount to harassment. The organisation also sought action against a female staff, alleging that she had been arrogant towards the visitors at the office.

AHAM members resign en masse
TURA, April 18: As many as 71 members of AHAM from various headquarters and units, including from the Central Executive Board (CEB) in Tura and Assam, on Tuesday resigned en masse from the primary membership of the organisation. Besides those from headquarters of Tura and Assam Zones, others who resigned included from units like Bolori, Aradongga and Boko. In his resignation letter given to AHAM CEB president in Tura on behalf of all 71 members, Public Relations and Grievances Secretary, Sengrak Cheran Momin, cited the reasons for the resignation as personal.

4th phase for farmers’ project in JH
JOWAI, April 18: The FARM Northeast Project, initiated by Jaintia Hills Development Society, on Tuesday launched the 4th phase of the project which will be implemented in the next three years in 12 villages falling under Thadlaskein and Laskein C&RD Block. The project was formally launched by the BDO of Thadlaskein C&RD Block, B Sungoh, in the presence of Agriculture Development Officer of Laskein Block, R Lamare, Assistant General Manager of NABARD, Grevile Kharlukhi, Director of JHDS, Fr Manbha Pakem, among others. The project was first launched in 2013 and it was implemented in several villages of Jaintia Hills region. The farmers in the past nine years have greatly benefitted through the project, especially in regard with promotion of organic farming, revival of the plantation of traditional medicinal plants, training on new farming techniques and marketing of the agricultural produce.

Chad Sukra to be held on Sunday
SHILLONG, April 18: The Seinraij Jowai will on April 23 organise the Chad Sukra, a festival to pay reverence to mother nature and celebrate her before the cultivation of crops begins. It may be mentioned that the celebration at Mynkoi Pyrdi will be attended by Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla as the chief guest. Later in the afternoon, the celebration will be held at Iawmusiang and will be attended by Cabinet Minister Comingone Ymbon as the chief guest. The closing ceremony will be held at Mynkoi Pyrdi in the evening and will be attended by Hammarsing Kharmar from Seng Khasi Kmie as the special guest.
