SHILLONG, April 24: Meghalaya’s ailing education sector, which is looking for much needed oxygen to make a comeback, is eagerly awaiting the constitution of the State Education Commission that will advise the state government on matters relating to schools and colleges in terms of their management, institutional structure and salary structures.
A government source on Monday said the process of identification of members is under way and depending on their consent, the Commission will be constituted soon.
The state cabinet had, last year, approved the setting up of the education commission.
The source said that once all the members are selected, a final meeting will be held and the Commission will be officially notified.
The team will comprise 7-10 members and would consist of academicians and experts in the field of education, the source said.
The Commission will be tasked with producing a concrete solution and strategic recommendation for ushering in reforms in the education system from the perspective of the National Education Policy.
Meanwhile, an official from the Education Department said that the state government will soon float an advertisement to recruit around 1,000 teachers.
The official said that the Meghalaya Public Service Commission takes a lot of time to complete the recruitment process and as a stop-gap arrangement MTET qualified teachers will be appointed on a temporary basis for a period of 59 days.
