KHADC to reintroduce property inheritance bill

SHILLONG, April 25: The KHADC will retable the Khasi Inheritance of Property Bill, 2021, during the summer session of the council to be convened in June after improving the bill by incorporating the views and suggestions of a select committee constituted for the purpose.
Informing this here on Tuesday, KHADC CEM Titosstarwell Chyne said the select committee will meet on May 6 to discuss the changes to be incorporated in the bill to make it better and legally sound.
The committee, headed by Chyne, comprises Leader of Opposition PN Syiem, Congress MDC Charles Marngar and former executive member Paul Lyngdoh.
Chyne said the primary objective of the bill is to streamline the distribution of ancestral and self-acquired property.
“The objective of this bill has been misunderstood. It is not mandatory that all the children will get a share of the parental property. It depends on the will of the parents who will choose the heir to their property,” the KHADC CEM said.
It may be added here that in the Khasi matrilineal society, the parental property is traditionally awarded to the youngest daughter.
Chyne made it clear that there is no disagreement with the ongoing practice that the youngest daughter will get the entire share of the parental property.
“But there are parents who divide the property among all the siblings. There won’t be any problem in this system as long as the youngest daughter does not raise an objection,” he added.
