SHILLONG/TURA, April 25: Congress MLA Saleng Sangma has asked the state government to address the power woes before the ongoing load-shedding leads to closure of industries which will affect the state’s economy.
Speaking to media persons here, Saleng said that there are several people and even industries in the state which depend on regular supply of power. If the situation is not improved, there is a fear that industries may even close down.
According to Sangma, load-shedding is not only paralysing the system but also taking a toll on the state’s economy.
He even lamented that students who are appearing for different examinations are faced with hardship.
Similar has been the story for hospitals in the state, Saleng said.
“Load-shedding along with heatwave is a disaster,” he added.
It may be mentioned that Meghalaya is witnessing an 8-10 hour-long load-shedding daily since the state’s own gencos (generating units) are non-functional.
WGH DC clarifies on increased timings
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani on Tuesday downplayed rumours of an increase in load-shedding timings.
The clarification came amidst a note being circulated through social media which showed the timings to have been increased from the current 10 to 12 hours.
“I can confirm that there will be no increase in timings of load-shedding from the present 10 hours. What is circulating online is fake. However, as far as timings go, there may be a tweak as I have suggested a shorter period of load-shedding during peak business hours,” said the DC when contacted.
Garo Hills has been going through one of the driest patches in history of the region with rains giving the entire area a miss.
The continued load-shedding has only added to the woes of the people.
