Crackdown on drugs: 274 people arrested, 181 cases registered

SHILLONG/KHLIEHRIAT, May 5: Meghalaya Director General of Police on Friday revealed that the state police, as part of its effort to combat drug trafficking, has arrested around 274 people besides registering 181 cases against drug traffickers in the past one year.
Speaking to media persons here, the DGP said that out of the 274 people, 68 arrested in connection with drugs trafficking were from Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and others, including 37 young women.
The DGP further informed that the police have also made a huge amount of seizure during the past one year, including 11.6 kg of heroin, 50,000 bottles of cough syrup, 42,000 yaba tablets and 47,000 other psychotropic substances.
The other seizures which were made by the police from the drug traffickers include 127 vehicles and 292 mobile phones.
Meanwhile, the DGP observed that the seizures, which were made by the police in the past one year, are a strong indication of how serious the drug menace in Meghalaya is.
Stating that members from different sections of society have expressed their concern over the situation arising out of drugs, the DGP assured that the police will go all out to eradicate the drug menace from the society.
He also informed that the department has already submitted 12 proposals to the state government relating to preventive detention of repeat offenders.
The DGP further informed that the state government is still seeking legal opinions on this matter. “It will take some time to put things in place,” Bishnoi added.

Two drugs peddlers arrested in EJH
Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills Police on Thursday night arrested two drug peddlers, viz. Jaydar Ali (34) and Sanidul Islam (20), both residents of Assam, following a tip-off that they were in a truck (AS-028-AC-0429) from Kalian towards Khliehriat with suspected contraband concealed inside the vehicle.
Accordingly, a naka was set up at Byndihati Petrol Pump and at 9:45 pm, the aforesaid vehicle, laden with cement, was intercepted and subsequently searched.
During the search, six soap boxes, one plastic tobacco container, one vial with yellow cap containing suspected yellow orange powder, one mobile phone and Rs. 500 in cash were found from the possession of Ali.
The suspected contraband items, following a test, were found to be heroin, weighing 65.32 gram.
The items were seized and the duo was also arrested in this connection.
