Tourist boat capsizes in Kerala’s Malappuram, 22 dead

Shillong, May 8: At least 22 people died when a tourist boat carrying around 40 passengers capsized in Tanur area of Kerala’s Malappuram on Sunday evening.

The district administration reported that 22 people have died thus far. Seven persons, according to Minister V Abdurahiman, are in critical condition.

Many people were trapped under the boat. The capsized boat was later towed to shore.

With the assistance of volunteers and members of the fire services, rescue efforts started as soon as the reports of the incident surfaced.

The incident took place around 7 pm, according to the police. However, the precise reason for the disaster was unknown at the time.

Meanwhile, relatives of the victims would receive an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the national relief fund, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
