SHILLONG, May 9: Speculation is rife in the political circles about a possible move by the Trinamool Congress MLAs to merge with the BJP even though leaders of both political parties are maintaining a stony silence on the development.
Giving further push to the reports that TMC Parliamentary Party Leader, Mukul Sangma will join the BJP, a source in the knowhow of things confirmed to The Shillong Times on Tuesday that Sangma had travelled to Delhi recently and met top BJP functionaries there.
While the source did not disclose the agenda of the meetings, Sangma’s meeting with the BJP central leadership points to the fact that there is much more than meets the eye.
Neither BJP nor TMC has confirmed the same.
Mukul had, earlier, rubbished the reports that he was shifting base to the BJP despite reports to the contrary. The reports suggest that he along with his daughter and Ampati MLA Miani D. Shira, Rajabala MLA Mizanur Rahman Kazi and Dadenggre MLA Rupa M. Marak are all set to join the BJP.
Commenting on the reports, TMC state president and Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope denied being aware of any such move by his party MLAs to merge with the BJP.
Pyngrope told The Shillong Times that he had no information about this move and had no clue if there was any such move by the BJP central leadership in Delhi or the state leadership here.
Earlier, BJP state president Ernest Mawrie had also denied knowledge about TMC legislators’ readiness to join the BJP.
It may be recalled that Mukul had quit the Congress along with 11 legislators in November 2021 to join the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC.
