Guv takes tour of Dawki; headmen rue poor network connectivity

JOWAI/SHILLONG, May 10: Governor Phagu Chauhan was on Wednesday apprised of the poor mobile network coverage along the border areas by the local headmen during his visit to Dawki in West Jaintia Hills.
As part of his tour, the Governor visited the recently inaugurated Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) office and Integrated Check Post (ICP), Dawki, and held a meeting with the officials of various central agencies, viz. Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), BSF, Customs and officials of district administration, including Superintendent of Police, PD-DRDA, SDO (Civil) of Amlarem and Pynursla Civil Subdivisions and headmen of nearby villages.
During the meeting, the Governor was briefed about the various aspects of Integrated Check Post at Dawki, the role and responsibilities of Customs and Central Excise department and implementation of various central schemes such as PMAY, MGNRERS, SSA, PM-POSHAN, National Health Mission, PMGSY, etc.
The West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police also apprised the Governor of the law and order situation in the area.
During the day, the Governor also held interactions with headmen of villages and enquired about their hardships and current development works in their respective areas.
The local headmen informed the Governor about poor mobile network coverage along the border areas.
They also requested the Governor to ensure that the Shillong-Dawki Road project is expedited.
He also had a detailed discussion on issues relevant to the development of the Dawki area and instructed the officials to focus on the overall betterment of the people.
Furthermore, in order to strengthen the Indo-Bangladesh ties, the Governor also visited the Indo-Bangladesh Maitri Dwar at Tamabil
border checkpost and interacted with the officials of Bangladesh Border Guards, during which he offered them packets of sweets as a gesture of goodwill.
Later, the Governor also visited the Border Outpost of the 4th Battalion BSF at Dawki, during which he was briefed about the security measures undertaken by the BSF in the region by Inspector General Pradeep Kumar.
The Governor, during the day, also visited Umngot River.
