SOHIONG, May 10: The exuberant electorates of Sohiong came out in large numbers to cast their votes in the adjourned election to Sohiong constituency on Wednesday registering an impressive turnout of over 90 per cent.
The demise of HDR Lyngdoh, former minister and one of the contenders for the seat, had necessitated the adjournment of the election to Sohiong seat. Lyngdoh was a UDP candidate.
According to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor, the polling percentage in Sohiong stood at 91.92% on Monday, bettering 2018 Assembly elections percentage by 1.46%.
“There could be a slight increase in the percentage of the voters’ turnout once we have the final tally,” the CEO told reporters.
Kharkongor said that the polling percentage in 2018 in Sohiong was 90.46%.
Meanwhile, Kharkongor revealed that the entire voting process was by and large peaceful.
The CEO said that the voting percentage was higher among the female voters as compared to the males.
Stating that there was brisk voting in the morning, Kharkongor said the voting process slowed down during the afternoon and then picked up again in the evening.
According to him, the voting percentage was at its highest in the morning.
Three polling stations recorded more than 96% voter’s turnout, he added, while informing reporters that there was no report of any malfunctioning of EVMs during the polling process.
Earlier, a problem was encountered involving the machines during mock polls. The machine in question was immediately replaced.
On the other hand, around 1,104 litres of liquor was seized in the poll-bound Sohiong constituency which amounts to Rs 4 lakh by the Excise department, Kharkongor said, adding that the total seizure was around 1450.97 litres.
