SHILLONG, May 13: The precarious situation concerning Tura Civil Hospital is closely being monitored by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who has directed the department to take all precautionary measures.
The new building of the Tura Civil Hospital, which houses some of the most critical departments including the ICU, is currently on the verge of collapse after landslides behind the hospital premises have practically rendered the building unsafe.
Lyngdoh, who is currently in Jodhpur to attend a meeting on Saturday, said that she has issued a directive on the need for evaluation of the situation, while adding that the technical team of PWD and Health Engineering Wing is on the ground.
As per preliminary report, she said that the landslide happened due to leaking sewer lines near oxygen tank (psychiatric ward).
According to her, the Medical Superintendent had approached the local Health Engineering Wing three months back but the Executive Engineer did not take timely action and the boulder wall collapsed.
According to the Medical Superintendent, the hospital noticed the wall giving away this March.
Informing that all patients have been evacuated, Lyngdoh said that the building is not operational now, adding that disaster management unit has been notified, and even the DHS (MI) has been informed.
The Health Engineering Wing is on the repair job but progress of work is very slowly, and it also requests financial commitment, according to the medical superintendent, she said.
Lyngdoh said she advised the medical superintendent to inspect the building on Sunday and declare the building unsafe.
The Minister also said that she has directed the authorities to evacuate people from nearby buildings in the likelihood of a collapse pulling nearby structures.
