Raj Bhavan Shillong celebrates foundation day of Sikkim
SHILLONG, May 16: The celebration of 48th foundation day of Sikkim was on Tuesday celebrated with a cultural evening at Raj Bhavan Shillong. According to a statement here, the programme was organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Shillong, in collaboration with the Arts and Culture department and was attended by Governor Phagu Chauhan as the chief guest. “The cultural evening showcased a splendid array of performances that included presentations by Pooja Bareli and her troupe, a sarod vandan by renowned artist Tarun Kalita and a traditional Khasi dance, Shad Mastieh,” the statement said. In his address, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor, Dr BDR Tiwari, enlightened the attendees about the remarkable achievements of Sikkim. He also shared insights into the fascinating history of Sikkim, tracing its journey from being a sovereign kingdom to becoming the 22nd state of the Indian Union on May 16, 1975. Governor, to mark the occasion, also planted five fruit saplings in the lawn of the Raj Bhavan.
Duo held with heroin
SHILLONG, May 16: One Lalrohluo Hmar, a resident of Assam, and one Lhingneivah Singson, a resident of Manipur, were on Tuesday apprehended by an ANTF team along with staff of Khliehriat Police Station. Heroin weighing 65.92 gram was also recovered from them. According to a statement here, on May 15, information was received that a duo was proceeding from Silchar towards Khliehriat side in a tourist bus (AS-01-LC-7641) and carrying a consignment of illegal contraband. Accordingly, an ANTF team along with staff of Khliehriat Police Station set up a naka and on Tuesday intercepted the aforesaid bus. During the search of the bus, Singson was found to be one of the passengers along with her husband Lalroho. A search of the duo was immediately conducted and contraband items were recovered from their possession. The items that were seized include heroin, a mobile phone and Rs 5,000 in cash. Meanwhile, in another seizure on Tuesday, one Khliehriat-bound vehicle (AS-01S-4669) was signalled to stop at a naka check point at Damcherra, Umkiang, NH-06. A subsequent check of the vehicle led to the recovery of marijuana weighing 51 kg. In this regard, Ershad Miah of South Tripura was apprehended, while the vehicle, marijuana and a mobile phone were seized.
