SHILLONG, May 18: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said the roster system is not meant to benefit members of any particular community but to ensure the implementation of the reservation policy in letter and spirit.
He made the statement after a meeting with the MLAs of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0 government.
Downplaying speculations that the roster system would give undue benefit to the Garos, the chief minister said the roster system has to be there for the implementation of the reservation policy. He was quick to add that the roster system should have been implemented from the day it was officially notified.
Pointing out that roster allows a particular post meant for a certain community to go to that community itself, he said the government did its best to clear the doubts aired by the MLAs during the meeting.
Terming the roster system as complicated, he said the government will have a meeting with the leaders of all political parties on Friday.
The state government would also reach out to the stakeholders to explain to them how the roster system actually works.
Sangma said reservation without a roster is meaningless. “A roster is a scheme, a process, or a schedule to implement the reservation policy in letter and spirit,” he explained.
He also made it clear that the government would not discuss the broader concept of the job reservation policy before first trying to resolve the issue of the roster system.
“The roster system would have 10 points, 20 points, 100 points, and even more than 200 points in the recruitment of some cadres,” he said.
