SHILLONG, May 18: The UDP has said the roster system needs more deliberations and discussions.
“We have had a few meetings, but I feel the subject needs more discussions across the table,” UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said on Thursday.
Appreciating Sangma’s effort in inviting all the MLAs of the coalition to look at the presentation given by the government, he said, “Before we come to any conclusion, we must ensure that the decision taken should be in the best interest of the people of the state.”
The UDP had sought the implementation of the roster system prospectively, not retrospectively. It urged the government to come up with a rationale and formulae that are non-discriminatory and acceptable to all the reserved categories in the state.
The Meghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC), meanwhile, is in the process of compiling its views and concerns on the roster system and will hear out the state government on Friday before laying bare its plans at a later date.
State TMC president, Charles Pyngrope said he was out of town on medical grounds. “As I cannot attend Friday’s meeting, I have asked party vice-president, George B. Lyngdoh to attend and present the government’s views before the party.”
“This issue is not about the government or the opposition. It is for the entire state and all stakeholders including the political parties should have a consensus on this. Let us see how the discussions pan out,” Pyngrope said.
