SHILLONG, June 1: The East Khasi Hills district administration has decided to impose the odd-even traffic rule for all commercial vehicles plying towards Police Bazar and Motphran from June 5.
East Khasi Hills District Magistrate Rosetta Mary Kurbah issued a notification to this effect on Thursday saying the issue of traffic congestion in Shillong is particularly prominent in the city’s busiest commercial areas of Khyndailad and Motphran and in pursuance of the High Court of Meghalaya order to adopt immediate measures to ease the traffic in Shillong, particularly around the central business district and the entry and exit points.
As per the order, all public transport vehicles i.e. SPTS buses, SSPTS maxi cabs and local taxis plying from Kachari Point towards Police Bazar and Motphran will operate on an odd-even basis from June 5.
Vehicles having registration numbers ending with odd digits (1,3,5,7,9) are to ply only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while vehicles having registration numbers ending in even digits (0,2,4,6,8) are to ply only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
There would be no restriction on Sundays.
The order further asked all vehicle owners and drivers to use the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) and carry a copy of the registration certificate for inspection at any given time.
“Anyone found driving with tampered number plates shall be dealt with strictly in accordance with relevant provisions of the law, including revocation of driver’s license,” the order said.
