WGH homestay bags excellence award on env protection

SHILLONG, June 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday handed over the Meghalaya Excellence Award on environment protection which consisted of a citation trophy, and a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh to the owner of Sasatgre homestay, Darmen G Momin. The minister presented the award during an elaborate gathering, as part of the World Environment Day celebration at the State Convention Centre.
Momin, who has named his traditional home stay Do.patchi, is a part of Momin’s project to protect indigenous flora and fauna while at the same time promoting eco tourism. He has single handedly worked tirelessly for the conservation of the house, which caters to both domestic and foreign tourists.
Momin was also awarded the National Responsible Tourism : Grassroot Heroes by Outlook magazine at Ooty, Tamil Nadu on 17 March. The award was handed over by Tamil Nadu Tourism minister K. Ramachandran.
