SHILLONG, June 8: Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma on Thursday recognised Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Ronnie V. Lyngdoh as the Leader of the Opposition (LO) in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
A notification issued by Commissioner and Secretary of Assembly Secretariat, Andrew Simons said Lyngdoh has been recognised as the LO by the Assembly Speaker with effect from the forenoon of June 8, 2023.
Congress MLA, Saleng A. Sangma has been recognised as the Opposition Chief Whip in the Assembly.
Lyngdoh said the decision of the Assembly Speaker to appoint the LO means honouring the democratic set up.
“I think the Speaker has taken recognition of the Congress party being a national party even though we did not have the required number to ensure the smooth functioning of the Assembly,” the CLP leader said.
“Now that I am the leader of opposition, I can interact with other political parties and if there are any issues I can discuss with the other opposition parties,” he added.
