Awareness prog in Mawkyrwat on legislation for PwDs
MAWKYRWAT, June 9: An awareness programme on Right of Persons with Disabilities Act was on Friday organised for the grassroots level workers, including CBRWs, MRWs, anganwadi ASHA, et al. The programme was organised by the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development Rehabilitation & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangan) in collaboration with the Directorate of Social Welfare, Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, State Resource Centre for Disability Affairs, Office of District Medical & Health Officer and Health & Family Welfare department. During the programme, Officer-in-charge of CRC Shillong, Ram Shakal Sahani, who was the resource person, informed the attendees that the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act protects the rights of the people with disabilities in all areas, including education, livelihood, health, et al. He said following the legislation was effectuated, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, muscular dystrophy, acid attack victims, hard of hearing, speech and language disability, specific learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders and chronic neurological disorders were recognised as disabilities. He also said that according to the Act, the government should ensure that discrimination should not be meted out to people with disabilities. As part of the programme, certificates were also given away to the participants.

10 villages in SWKH declared ‘Avoidable Blindness-Free Village’
SHILLONG, June 9: A total of 10 villages in South West Khasi hills have been declared ‘Avoidable Blindness Free-Village’ by Bansara Eye Care Hospital in collaboration with Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU) and the Society for Promotion of Eye Care & Sight (SPECS). According to a statement here, a ‘declaration ceremony’ was conducted at Mawkyrwat, which was attended by South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T. Lyngwa as the chief guest, headmen from various villages, among others. During the programme, the headmen of the 10 villages thanked the Bansara Eye Care Hospital as well as Operation Eyesight Universal for their endeavours towards eradicating eye-related diseases. Meanwhile, the DC, in his address, lauded the efforts of Bansara Eye Care Centre. It may be mentioned that the villages that were declared ‘Avoidable Blindness Free-Village’ are Laitlawsang, Pyndensakwang, Mawmerang, Mawrap, Rangmaw, Sohkhyllam, Nonglang, Mawsde, Umjarain and Shaid Shaid Umoid.

NONGSTOIN, June 9: A programme on Jan Bhagidari was on Friday organised at New Nongstoin by the Office of the District Mission Coordinator, Office of the District School Education Officer, West Khasi Hills, in association with Red FM Shillong. The programme was attended by West Khasi Hills Extra Assistant Commissioner R Kharkongor as the chief guest, as well as DSEO, L Syiemlieh, students and teachers. During the programme, Syiemlieh informed the attendees that the programme aims to highlight the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and India’s G20 Presidency. She also informed that as part of the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, the Ministry of Education has launched NIPUN BHARAT Mission for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy.
