SHILLONG, June 15: The state government is contemplating to involve schools, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to bolster its fight against the menace of drug abuse.
Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, who conducted a meeting on the drug menace with different faith-based groups here on Thursday, said discussions were held on the need to up the ante against substance abuse by increasing the number of counselors, intensifying awareness campaigns and de-stigmatisation of drug users.
The government has earmarked Rs 10 crore per annum towards this effort, he said.
The government has identified seven districts as “hotspots” of drug menace which would be provided with the funds, Lyngdoh said.
Funds will also be allocated to NGOs, and other entities with credentials to fight substance abuse in the state.
He explained that the government is keen to rope in faith-based groups since they have the infrastructure to deal with the problems.
The groups that attended the meeting were requested to hold in-house consultations and make necessary suggestions to the government.
