Shillong, June 19: Congress MDC, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has defended that the decision of the party to support the NPP in the KHADC by claiming that this was done taking into consideration of the pending amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
While speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said that if the Congress does not support the NPP then there might be Governor’s Rule in the KHADC.
He further reiterated that it is important that the Executive Committee should be in place especially at the critical juncture when there are apprehensions over the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
The Congress MDC however made it clear that the party will support the proposed amendment is good for the state and it will oppose if it is detrimental to the people of the state.
When asked why the Congress is ready to associate with the NPP who is an ally of the BJP at the Centre, he said that the mandate in the Assembly and in the council is totally different.
“We have to understand that there is no BJP in the KHADC. But the BJP is part of the NPP led MDA ruling coalition in the state. The main concern of the council is protect the ownership of land and to have laws for the protection of the customary laws and usages,” Lyngdoh said.
When asked to rate the performance of the UDP led EC under the leadership of Chief Executive Member (CEM), Titosstarwell Chyne said that the NPP which is major partner of the UDP led EC in the council has decided to back out speak volume of the leadership of the CEM.
“If everything was fine then it would not have come to this stage. The no-confidence motion which was moved in the floor of the House has clearly question over the style of functioning of the CEM,” the Congress MDC added.
