SHILLONG, June 21: The state government on Wednesday submitted a report before the High Court of Meghalaya on a PIL filed with the court pertaining to the scarcity of water in Shillong and East Khasi Hills District as a whole.
According to the petitioner in the case, the water supply scheme pertaining to Shillong city that was formulated in or about the year 2009 has not been fully implemented.
The petitioner also complained that in the absence of regular supply of water to some areas, residents in such areas are at the mercy of private water-tankers and the exorbitant rate charged by them despite obtaining water free from the nearby rivers.
The petitioner said that such unregulated proliferation of private water-tankers should be checked and a cap be put as to the money payable for each load of water.
The petitioner also sought for and obtained permission from the court to file a rejoinder to the state’s report, indicating further grievances.
