JOWAI, June 22: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS), Jowai branch, in collaboration with the Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai, on Thursday celebrated Thomas Jones Day under the theme ‘U Synñiang U Thomas Jones to the people of Khasi’ at the college premises.
The function was attended by Khasi lecturer Renda Manla Khonglah, KJP Synod Mihngi senior executive secretary Rev. K. Pariat, college principal Dr. DG Lyngdoh, KAS finance secretary Phrikshon Kharsharing, et al.
It may be mentioned that June 22 is celebrated as Thomas Jones Day to mark the arrival of the Founding Father of the Khasi Alphabet, Thomas Jones, in Sohra on June 22, 1841.
Jones, who breathed his last at an age of 39 on September 16, 1849, was buried at the Scottish Church cemetery in Calcutta.
The state government in 2018 had announced that the arrival of Thomas Jones in Sohra will be observed as Thomas Jones Day.
