African Swine Fever contained, declares govt

SHILLONG, June 25: The African Swine Fever which killed several pigs and was the cause of the decline in sale of pork in the state has now been contained, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department said on Sunday.
On the other hand, fresh Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) infections among cattle have gone down.
A senior official said that no new deaths of pigs due to ASF has been reported, while adding that the last confirmed death of a pig due to the disease was reported from Ri-Bhoi on June 2.
The number of pigs that have died due to ASF since January 2023 is 238, the official said.
On the situation insofar as cattle and Lumpy Skin Disease are concerned, it was informed the number of cattle which have died till date due to the disease in the state is 101.
Informing that the total number of active LSD cases is 2,192, he added that a total of 28,595 have been vaccinated so far.
The number of cattle infected by LSD is 8,177 while 5,588 cattle have recuperated from the disease. “More than 70 per cent of affected animals recovered due to timely treatment given to infected animals. Recovery rate is higher,” the official said.
