SHILLONG, June 25: Meghalaya TMC is unhappy with the state government’s possible move to select experts from outside the state to review the reservation policy even as it questioned if the government does not have faith in its own people.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had earlier said that the search committee constituted by the government to look for members of the expert committee that is going to review the state’s reservation policy, would be according to priority to the quality and qualifications of the expert than the state of their origin.
“It depends on the wisdom of the government but how can you bring people who don’t even know how to spell Khasi, Jaintia, Garo properly to talk about the problems of the people, forget about knowing the socio-cultural ethos and the history of the state,” questioned TMC state vice president George B Lyngdoh on Sunday.
The state government had recently denied going into specifics about the composition of the members of the expert committee.
Questioning this, Lyngdoh, said, “How will we expect a person from outside to understand the sentiments of the people as it is not only a technical issue but also linked to the socio-cultural diversity of the state?” He pointed out that there are people in the state who are an expert in this subject, and who have run the state being in the administration for many years. “So does the government not trust its own people,” he added.
The state government had recently instituted a three-member search committee headed by Chief Secretary DP Wahlang to recommend five names to constitute the expert committee which will review the reservation policy of the state.
