SHILLONG, June 27: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) celebrated its 71st District Council Day at a function on the council premises here on Tuesday.
It may be recalled that then United Khasi-Jaintia Hills Autonomous District was inaugurated by the then Governor of Assam, Jairamdas Daulatram, at Dinam Hall, Jaiaw, on June 27 of 1952.
The district was formed under the Sixth Schedule, which gave it an autonomous administration status.
After Meghalaya became a separate state in 1972, the district was re-organised into the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council. Speaking at the function, KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem lauded late Rev JJM Nichols Roy, also referred to as Father of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution owing to his struggle that led to the birth of the district councils.
On the occasion, floral tributes were paid at the memorial bust of late Rev Nichols Roy on the premises of the Council by the CEM, KHADC Chairman Lamphrang Blah, Deputy CEM Pynshgnain N Syiem and District Council Affairs department Joint Secretary A Nikhla.
