City event remembers Father of Indian Statistics

SHILLONG, June 29: The 17th National Statistics Day was on Thursday celebrated at Shillong College here, during which Father of Indian Statistics, Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, was remembered.
Organised by the National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division), Regional Office, Shillong, the programme was thematised on ‘Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals’, and was attended by Prof. TK Chakrabarty of North-Eastern Hill University as the chief guest.
In his address, Chakrabarty explained in detail the importance of aligning states’ own Indicator frame with the national indicator frame for effective monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals.
On the other hand, Joint Director and Regional Head NSSO (FOD), Shillong, N Mohondas Singh, spoke about the life of Prof. Mahalanobis and his achievements.
He also stressed the importance of the presence of reliable data in policy making and appealed to the people for cooperation when NSSO officials visit them to collect data for various surveys conducted by NSSO.
Singh also informed about the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s contribution in the development of the State Indicator Framework aligned with the National Indicator Framework for effective monitoring of SDG goals.
Principal of Shillong College, Dr. E. Kharkongor, on the other hand, stressed the importance of Statistics and reliable data.
She also expressed interest in holding interaction programmes to facilitate job opportunities for students who opt Statistics as a subject.
