SHILLONG, June 29: Leader of Opposition, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has showered praise on state police for what he claimed securing the state “internally and externally”.
Claiming that law and order was under control, he lauded the state police for doing a “commendable job” to suppress militancy.
“I believe militancy is now under control and very soon it will be wiped out because we need development in the state,” he said, refusing to divulge the nature of discussions as they involved matters of state security.
Lyngdoh said the State Security Commission met recently and discussed a gamut of issues, including on drugs.
“Drug problem is one issue that has been flagged by the chief minister. The police department has been asked to be vigilant and cooperate with neighbouring states to ensure the inflow of drugs is kept at minimum possible if not totally cut off,” he said.
He said the meeting also discussed ways and means to decongest traffic and the use of drone technology to constantly monitor traffic and divert it wherever needed.
“The government is going to set up a separate directorate of traffic police and we are addressing the problem seriously,” he added.

Vehicles, drivers sought for Opposition MLAs
Lyngdoh urged the government to provide the MLAs of opposition parties with a government vehicle along with driver and a clerical Grade IV staff so they can discharge their duties efficiently. “If MLAs are given more mobility, it will help, especially those hailing from far-flung constituencies in discharging their duties properly. If the constituency is taken care of, the state is taken care of,” he added.
