BAGHMARA, June 30: In another tragic incident, a 34-year-old man from Ramgittim Mahadeo village in South Garo Hills drowned after he was swept away by the strong currents of Mahadeo River from overnight rains while he was trying to cross the river on his makeshift bamboo raft. As per local sources, the incident took place at about 11 am on June 28. The victim, identified as one Walchang Sangma, had created a makeshift bamboo raft to cross the river that had swelled due to continued rains over the past few days. The currents in the fast-flowing river, however, were overwhelming. Sangma, while trying to navigate his way through, apparently lost his slipper. While attempting to retrieve his slipper, his raft was sucked into the water and was subsequently disintegrated when it hit a nearby obstruction. Sangma’s body was later retrieved downstream from the same river at about 3:15 pm, and was later handed over to his family following completion of legal formalities.
