One dead, 8 hurt after vehicle falls into SWKH gorge

MAWKYRWAT, July 1: One man was killed on the spot while eight others, including the victim’s wife and children, sustained grievous injuries after the car that they were traveling in went off a cliff and fell into an approximately 250-foot-deep gorge at Keniong village in South West Khasi Hills.
The incident took place at around 11 am during which the vehicle (ML04B1269), driven by one Khrawbor Nongsiang of Mawlyndep village, West Khasi Hills, fell into the gorge while trying to overtake a truck at Keniong village.
The vehicle was travelling from Nongstoin towards Amarsang village near Nongjri under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division.
Out of the nine people travelling in the vehicle, one Kalbinus Nongbri of Amarsang village was killed on the spot, while eight others sustained grievous injuries.
They were immediately rushed to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital, and were later shifted to Shillong for further treatment.
According to sources, the body of the deceased, meanwhile, has been kept at the morgue of Mawkyrwat CHC.
