Shillong, july 3: An autorickshaw driver has been arrested in Assam’s Kamrup district for allegedly raping a minor girl, murdering her, and dumping her body in the Digaru river. The 16-year-old girl’s body was recovered from the river on Friday.
The accused, identified as Bablu Tumung, has been taken into police custody. Tumung has confessed to the crime during the investigation, and the police are conducting further inquiries.
The girl had gone missing on June 26 after she visited a nearby shop to recharge her mobile phone. The incident has sparked outrage in the area, leading to protests by locals at the Sonapur police station on Sunday. The protesters demanded severe punishment for the accused.
