KHADC to seek legal help on UCC

SHILLONG, July 2: The KHADC is likely to hold a meeting with its legal counsel on Tuesday to discuss and finalise a draft petition to be submitted to the Law Commission of India expressing its opposition to the Centre’s proposal to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) throughout the country.
KHADC Deputy CEM, PN Syiem told The Shillong Times on Sunday that the council will hold consultations with various stakeholders including the Himas and pressure groups after finalising the draft petition.
According to him, they will incorporate the views and of the stakeholders in the final petition if there is a need.
The KHADC has unanimously passed a resolution to urge the Centre not to implement the UCC in the Sixth Scheduled areas.
“We are unique in a sense that we have a rich cultural tradition and practices in terms of land ownership, having traditional heads that look after the welfare of the community, we also follow a matrilineal system, we also need to protect our language,” KHADC CEM, Pyniaid Sing Syiem had said while moving the resolution.
