Shillong, July 5: Jeakson Singh, a footballer hailing from Manipur, created a stir during the celebration of India’s victory in the 2023 SAFF Championship final against Kuwait. Despite the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, Jeakson Singh was spotted wrapping a multi-coloured Meitei flag over his jersey while receiving his winners’ medal.

Jeakson Singh, a defensive midfielder in the Indian national football team from Manipur’s Thoubal district, played a crucial role in securing India’s record ninth SAFF Championship title. During the medal presentation at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, the 22-year-old draped the Flag of Kangleipak (Salai Taret flag), which represents the seven clan dynasties of the Meitei ethnicity of ancient Manipur.

This act gained attention amidst the ongoing violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur over the past two months. Jeakson Singh’s action sparked a debate on social media, with some labeling him as “unprofessional” and “secessionist.” However, Jeakson Singh clarified that he draped the flag as a symbol of peace and a desire for normalcy to return to his home state.

While the Manipuri footballer’s act faced criticism from certain social media users who demanded action against him, it also garnered support from others who commended his stance for peace amid the prevailing tensions in Manipur.
