2nd win for Maw U-Tieng; Synroplang break their duck

SHILLONG, July 13: Maw U-Tieng SC bagged a second victory in the ongoing Shillong Sports Association’s Women’s League 2023 here today, while Synroplang 77 secured their first points with a maiden victory. In the first of the two Group B fixtures, Maw U-Tieng blanked Kharang SC 2-0 thanks to first half goals by Kynjailin Sohtun (6’) and Phibashida Lyngdoh (23’). Though out of the running for a place in the semifinals, Maw U-Tieng are now head and shoulders above the rest of the group with 6 points and they are in third place in the standings. Later, Synroplang overcame a run of three defeats to win 1-0 against Iasnohktilang Madanrting FC 1-0. The lone goal was scored by Aibanika Kharshiing (20’), who met a high ball forward and beat the goalkeeper. On Friday,the final group stage matches will take place and these will decide which teams take first position in the round robin stage. Group A’s PFR Football Academy will take on Laitkor SC in the first match at 2:30pm.This will be followed by Lumparing SC versus Mawlai SC in Group B at 4:15pm.
Naocha Singh joins Kerala Blasters from Mumbai City
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, July 13: Kerala Blasters FC have secured the signing of fill-back Naocha Singh on loan from Mumbai City FC, the club announced on Thursday.Naocha impressed for RoundGlass Punjab FC who won the I-League title last season on loan from the Islanders and played every minute for the north Indian side.The 23-year-old is extremely versatile and can play in any position across the defence thus helping head coach Ivan Vukomanovic have more flexibility.“I am so happy to join Kerala Blasters. They have always backed young players and with Coach Ivan, I hope to find new levels of performance that can contribute to the success of the team,” said Naocha after joining Kerala Blasters FC. Andrews, recommended by AIFF for women’s team role
NEW DELHI, July 13: Anthony Andrews, who guided Gokulam Kerala FC to back-to-back Indian Women’s League (IWL) titles in the last two seasons, was on Thursday recommended by the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) technical committee to take over as head coach of the national women’s team.Andrews is among the youngest coaches in India to have an AFC ‘A’ License. Under his guidance Gokulam Kerala won the IWL titles in 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.The AIFF’s technical committee headed by the legendary IM Vijayan met virtually and recommended Andrews for the post of Indian women’s team’s coach, which was lying vacant since the departure of Thomas Dennerby.The committee also recommended former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal player Ishfaq Ahmed as the head coach of the national U-16 men’s team. US Open: Sindhu, Lakshya march into second round
COUNCIL BLUFFS, (USA) July 13: P.V. Sindhu and her Indian compatriot, Lakshya Sen made a winning start in their US Open campaign with comfortable wins in their respective opening matches.Sindhu saw off local player Disha Gupta by 21-15, 21-10 in the first round of women’s singles while Lakshya dispatched Finland’s Kalle Koljonen 21-8, 21-16 in men’s singles on Wednesday. Sindhu will face world No. 30 Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei in her second-round clash on Thursday. The 21-year-old, Lakshya Sen will go up against the Czech Republic’s Jan Louda in the next round. Sankar Muthusamy, who made the main draw of men’s singles through the qualifiers, also reached the round of 16 after shocking eighth-seed Nhat Nguyen of Ireland 21-11, 21-16.Muthusamy will next play Israel’s Misha Zilberman in the Super 300 tournament.
