Indian Americans rally after Khalistani attack in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, July 15: Scores of Indian Americans held a peace rally in front of the Indian Consulate here to express solidarity with India following a recent attempted arson at the diplomatic facility by Khalistan supporters. A video by Khalistan supporters, dated July 2 posted on Twitter, showed the act of arson at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. It was the second such act of violence within months. A large number of Indian Americans from in and around San Francisco came out in support of India on Friday as they held a peaceful rally in front of the Indian Consulate in San Francisco against the recent act of violence.The protesters described it as an act of terrorism act and demanded that those responsible for violence be brought to justice. India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu visited the Consulate here on Thursday and met Indian diplomats and officials at the mission. India has asked its partner countries such as Canada, the UK and the US not to give space to “extremist Khalistani ideology” as it is “not good” for bilateral relations. (PTI)
Torrential rains leave 21 dead in S Korea
SEOUL, July 15: Heavy rains have killed 21 people and caused thousands to evacuate their homes across South Korea. Officials said 10 people remained missing and nine others were injured. Most fatalities were reported from the southeastern province of North Gyeongsang, where 16 people died largely due to landslides and housing collapses. The death toll is feared to rise as government agencies assess damage reported across the nation. Some 6,400 residents in the central county of Goesan were evacuated, as the Goesan Dam began to overflow. Many low-lying villages near the dam were submerged, and roads and bridges connecting the villages were cut off, trapping some residents in their homes. A total of 1,567 people from 1,002 households in 13 cities and counties had sought temporary shelters as of Saturday morning, as heavy downpours continued to fall across the country. Among them, 1,114 people could not return home. Thirty-one cases of damage to public property were reported. (IANS)
