SHILLONG, July 16: The Khasi Students’ Union on Sunday said it expects the state government to let the people know about the outcome of the meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue of inner-line permit (ILP) and the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
KSU president, Lambokstarwell Marngar told The Shillong Times that the government should inform the people about the Centre’s stand on the two resolutions passed by the state Assembly.
“We would like to know whether the Centre would fulfil these long-pending demands of the people of the state,” he said.
He said the state government should show its seriousness in order to ensure a positive outcome from the meeting with Modi and Shah.
“We understand that there is a growing frustration among the people due to the delay of the Centre,” Marngar said.
He said it is not necessary for the government to take some members of the NGOs along to New Delhi. “It is the responsibility of the government to fulfil the two demands,” he added.
A high-level delegation of the MDA 2.0 led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is scheduled to visit New Delhi later this month to push for the demands for implementing the ILP and including Garo and Khasi languages in the Eighth Schedule.
The delegation hopes Modi and Shah would finally come around on the two issues the state has been flagging for more than a decade.
MDA 2.0 spokesperson and Cabinet minister, Paul Lyngdoh on Saturday said the visit is expected to clinch the issues which could prove to be a game-changer for the state.
He also recalled that the state Assembly had adopted a resolution recommending the inclusion of Garo and Khasi languages in the Eighth Schedule.
