Guwahati, July 17: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is taking initiatives to transport essential commodities, including food items, to Manipur as supply of essential items to the state has been interrupted in the wake of the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

“With the co-operation of the state government, NFR is taking initiatives to transport essential commodities and other food items to Manipur. The Khongsang Railway station under NFR, located in the state of Manipur, has been opened for loading and unloading of goods,” an official statement issued here on Monday said.

Khongsang station is the latest station which was commissioned in 2022 under the Jiribam-Imphal new line project. The line was suspended owing to the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur.

“A marketing inspector has been specially deputed in Imphal for the convenience of the Manipur-based traders to book the commodities through railways. The marketing inspector will be available round the clock for any queries of the traders. All Manipur-based traders can now avail the facility of booking essential commodities from Khongsang station,” the statement said.

“The Khongsang goods shed operates between 6am and 4pm on a daily basis. Under special consideration for the state, piecemeal booking of wagons has been allowed for Manipur for the time-being. Already, onions from Maharashtra, potatoes from West Bengal and FMCG products from Assam have been booked for the state,” it said.

The initiatives taken by NFR are expected to be beneficial for the people of Manipur in the prevailing scenario. “The marketing inspector can be communicated over the phone (number 6000388439). NF Railway is fully committed to extend all possible assistance to the state of Manipur during the time of crisis,” it added.
