Another fisherman’s body fished out of river in WKH
NONGSTOIN, July 17: Following the drowning of three fishermen in Wahblei river, Maweit village, West Khasi Hills, in June, one of the three bodies was fished out on Monday. The body of one (L) Hubert Marthong of Maweit village was recovered by fishermen of the village from Wahblei river. The decomposed body was identified by the relatives of the deceased. Legal formalities were undertaken. Marthong’s body was second to be recovered among the three fishermen. One Kmenlang Nonglang’s body is yet to be found.
BSF jawans donate blood in Ampati
SHILLONG, July 17: A voluntary blood donation camp was organised by 50th Battalion of BSF Meghalaya in collaboration with Civil Hospital Ampati, South West Garo Hills, on Monday. More than 45 BSF personnel donated blood during the camp. The camp was inaugurated by Commandant of 50 Bn BSF, Yuvraj Dubey, in the presence of Second-in-Command, Randheer Singh Gill, and medical staff from Civil Hospital Ampati besides others. During the speech Medical Superintendent, Ampati Civil Hospital, Dr Denisha G Momin, emphasised the importance of blood donation, stating that one unit of blood donated by an individual can save the life of many needy persons. BSF volunteers who donated blood earned praise from the Medical Superintendent.
Base laid for bridge at Chokpot
TURA, July 17: Chokpot MLA and Chairman of Meghalaya Commission on Resource Mobilization, Sengchim N Sangma recently laid the foundation stone for the construction of a bridge over Dareng river at Gongganggre village under Chokpot Block in South Garo Hills. The 75-metre high-level bridge is to be constructed with an estimated cost of 4.79 crore. Due to the absence of the bridge over the river, villagers currently pass through very old suspension bridges which are very weak posing risk to lives. The proposed bridge is the outcome of one of the major initiatives undertaken by five VECs including Gongganggre, Dangilgre, Dagalgre,Kemranggre, Tebilgre and Asimdikgre by contributing through convergence with MGNREGA and Viability Gap funding of Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA). The bridge, when completed would connect the villagers to schools, health centres etc as well as help transportation of agriculture and horticulture produce of the farmers to the markets.
Miscreants steal gold ornaments
NONGSTOIN, July 17: Miscreants broke into a house in Nondein village, West Khasi Hills, in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday and stole the family’s valuables including cash. The house owner, Fulness Syiemlieh, and his family were in Patharkhnang for the weekend. After police inquiry, it was found out that three gold ornaments and cash not more than Rs 20,000 were stolen from the house. The aggrieved family is however ascertaining the total amount of cash and ornaments stolen.
Summer camp for scouts & guides
SHILLONG, July 17: Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides organised a four-day summer camp from July 11 to 14 for Scouts & Guides in South West Garo Hills, at Mothers’ Union SSA UP School, Ampati. As many as 215 students along with 17 official teaching staff, 11 Rovers and 5 Rangers participated in the Summer Camp. The camp was organised to bring different schoolchildren together and disseminate awareness on crucial subjects like drug abuse. In this regard, the students had a session on awareness with regard to drug abuse and HIV AIDS conducted by Dr Rikrak D Sangma, Ampati Civil Hospital. Later, they also had an awareness session for traffic rules and signals with SI Gaurav Koch, Zikzak Police Station, and SI Samuel A Sangma of Betasing Outpost, besides entertaining programmes like sing-song and talent-showcasing event. Social Education Organiser Ampati Taposh Ch Marak was the chief guest of the programme and camp, while Headmistress of Mothers’ Union SSA UP School, Ampati, Prosaline M Sangma, was the guest of honour.
