SHILLONG, July 17: The East Khasi Hills District Police has intensified foot patrolling in areas around Khyndai Lad to crack down on sex workers, whose acts of soliciting customers, it said, are not only illegal but many a time the cause for law and order problems.
In a statement, police said that a case vide Shillong Sadar PS Case No. 177(07)2023 U/S 7(1)(b) Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act has also been registered against the sex workers. A total of 15 sex workers were apprehended and legal action taken against them, it added.
On the other hand, vice squad raids by East Khasi Hills District Police and vigorous patrolling in the areas within Shillong is under way to ensure the safety of public and prevent untoward incidents.
It may be recalled that recently a case of drunken rowdyism in Shillong had prompted the district administration to impose curbs as a means to thwart further breakdown of law and order.
The police, in the statement on Monday, said that vice raids with the help of the Meghashakti (Women Police Commandos) were conducted in Motphran, Paltan Bazar, Mawblei, Nongrim Hills, Laitumkhrah Bazar, Mawlonghat, Urkaliar, Upper Shillong, Polo, Mawbah, Jhalupara and Upper Mawprem. During this, 1.12 lakh ml of IMFL and 7.74 lakh ml of illicit liquor were seized this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Shillong Traffic Police is also conducting day and night vehicle checking at various locations for offences such as drunken driving, riding without helmet, modified silencers, tinted glasses and other Motor Vehicle Act offences. In the last week, 277 vehicles have been compounded and Rs 2.36 lakh realised as fine from violators.
