NONGSTOIN, July 19: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawshynrut Circle have shut down the Meghalaya Rural Bank’s Riangdo Branch for allegedly scamming consumers in the name of deducting life insurance premiums.
The KSU unit, led by its general secretary Ulysis Ryntong and organising secretary Anselm Ryntong, took the extreme step after the bank ignored a one-month deadline to refund the money debited from the accounts of customers.
Last month, the Union held a meeting with the Regional Manager Region-III and asked the bank to refund the money deducted from the account of the customers. The KSU claimed that the bank used to deduct money from the consumers’ accounts in the name of life insurance without the consent of the consumers.
During the meeting, the regional manager had assured to refund the money within one month but since nothing was forthcoming, the Union decided to shut down the Riangdo branch.
