SHILLONG, July 23: Opposition leader Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has asserted that India, a country with so much diversity does not require the Uniform Civil Code.
He said that the country has been able to remain united despite its diversity and differences for 75 years.
“People have co-existed in this country which has a vibrant democracy. The Union government’s plans of bringing uniformity through UCC will not work,” he said.
Lyngdoh pointed out that some people are already speaking about exempting a particular section of the society from the purview of the UCC. “Where is the question of uniformity if certain sections are exempted from the purview of the proposed law,” he questioned.J
