SHILLONG, July 26: The East Khasi Hills district administration has sought the assistance of the Dorbar Shnongs of both urban and semi-urban areas in its fight against the menace of drugs and also towards maintenance of law and order.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with various headmen at Soso Tham auditorium here on Wednesday, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah said the district administration understands the important role the Dorbar Shnongs can play in the fight against drugs, dealing with petty crimes and also ensuring peace and harmony.
East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger urged the headmen to call helpline number 112 to report any untoward incident in their localities so that police may be able to reach on time.
“We want members of the Dorbar Shnongs to act as witnesses to help the police build a strong case when it comes to arrests under the NDPS Act,” Nongtnger said.
Commenting on the ongoing verification of the antecedents of tenants in various localities, SP (City), Vivek Syiem said the verification by the Dorbar Shnong will be of immense help to the police.
He said the verification process was not a new thing since the police have been conducting such exercise for passports, and setting up of guest houses, among other things.
Meanwhile, Rangbah Shnong of Jaiaw Shyiap Lumpyllon, PD Nongrum urged the police to arrest the kingpins of the drug trade who are outside the state.
He said the police would not be able to eradicate the problem of drugs only by arresting small-time peddlers.
He assured that the Dorbar Shnongs would be more than happy to work with the police since they are all supportive of the move to end the drugs menace and also for promotion of peace and harmony in the state.
