State’s UP level dropout rate highest in country

New Delhi, July 27: Meghalaya with an already high dropout rate in the secondary level in schools has now been found to have the highest level of dropout (10.6%) at the upper primary level too.
Meghalaya is followed by Assam (8.8%) and Punjab (8%). In the primary level, Meghalaya has a dropout rate of 9.8%, which is second only to Manipur (13.3%). Meghalaya is followed by Andhra Pradesh with 9.3%.
These figures were cited in the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of Education as it shared the data for Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) and state-wise data on the transition and dropout rate at elementary, secondary, and senior secondary school levels.
Odisha has the highest student dropout rate at the secondary school level followed by Meghalaya and Bihar.
According to the information, the national dropout rate for secondary school is 12.6% while Odisha has a dropout rate of 27.3%, followed by Meghalaya (21.7%), Bihar (20.5%) and Assam (20.3%).
The data shared in Parliament is that of the Department of School Education and Literacy’s Unified District Information System for Education Plus.
